Game of Thrones TV show (and previously book discussion before the new thread was started)

i'm some 500 pages into the third (of my pdf, so not sure what the real pages are), and, while i generally love this story, my main complaint is the somewhat varied pacing of the books. martin wastes pages describing the "thrice-boiled gold with-satin-laced purple doublets" that the characters "select before appreciating the delicate-wrought links within the dornish keep, admiring the interwoven hoops that made the bulk of the silver fashioned mail wall." his writing is good, but his long passages aren't quite melville-worthy expose's on what makes the white whale white. similarly, at times, he moves the story quite slowly, choosing too much character development/dialogue. otherwise, i find i read an hour longer than i meant too.

i do like the shades of gray he paints most of the characters in, particularly, jaime (at this point) and the younger clegane (though he was always set up to be a reluctant hero; no spoiler, he hasn't done anything great yet). tyrion is easy to like, as he is the natural underdog (as too is clegane, he is a picture of a brutal enemy, with only a single fear and single desire, but somehow does the 'noble' thing). but martin does a great job of making you feel outrage toward the revenge characters like ser thorne and janos slynt, or any time a main character dies or is betrayed.

as far as the show goes, i am really looking forward to arya and jaime. the girl that i've seen in the clips definitely captures who/what i picture arya to be, and jaime, well, i just want ti see a better redemptive story than lost happen (lost was lame tv. GoT is hopefully better). it will be hard to separate petyr baelish from councilman carcetti....

Another trailer, couple new shots.

So apparently reviewers are going to be sent the first episode this week, so maybe we will get lucky and get a leaked screener. Seems doubtful though, HBO is usually pretty good about this sort of thing.

But it's under a month away, so yeah, party time motherfuckers.

So it sounds like season two has already been green-lit, but HBO isn't officially announcing it until the premiere date, it's not official, but apparently the studio in Ireland has already begun pre-production for season two.

And TV critics have been given the first four episodes for review, so far they have all been overly positive.

Fuck yes.

So i am not a fan at all of fantasy or medieval fare, so will I like this at all? (note: I did like the Lord of the Rings, even if half of the series was really gay and corny at times).

ffs just watch it and find out

better yet read the books

I've never liked a fantasy book before (including LOTR) but I loved them. it's less magic and shit and more sopranos-esque backstabbing etc

A lot of critics are comparing it to 'Rome,' for the people who haven't read the books and are curious to know what it's like. It's not like LOTR very much, it's more realistic and really about the politics of being king and holding onto power.

I'd say watch the first episode when it airs in two weeks, check out some trailers that were posted here, but be careful of spoilers.

All right, I'm going to avoid watching anything until it officially premieres.

But I'm thinking of getting started with the series this week.

I'm expecting good things and that it won't be as boring and fucking awful as the Hobbit was (read that book twice, once when I was in 6th grade and again in college, and I still count it as one of the worst books I've ever read)

I'll be patient with it for the first 200 pages or so before I start losing patience. I'm expecting to be confused a bit.

I was never really a fan of the fantasy genre when I first read them, like you, I read the Hobbit and LOTR, maybe a few random fantasy novels when I was younger, but the fantasy elements aren't very prominent throughout the books.

It does take a little bit to get a feel for the main characters and separate them in your mind, but it's not as bad as some people say. You read a lot, so it shouldn't be a problem. Plus, Martin doesn't do nearly as much world-building as Tolkien did, so you won't find nearly as much exposition about the world as you did with LOTR, there definitely is some of that, but I never felt it dragged as I did with some of Tolkien's passages.

If you're willing to give it 200 pages, I'm going to go ahead and call it that if you like it, you'll have read the at least the first two books before the premiere date. Once I started, I finished all 4 books in about 3 weeks, they are that good. Book 3 being my favorite, the last half of that book is just epic shit happening all the time.

I just showed the trailers to my girlfriend. She is into it.

However, I don't have HBO, and getting it will double what I'm paying for cable. Not cool. I guess I will be torrenting and buying whenever they shove out the DVD's.

ouch man, I pay 11 bucks a month for HBO and that's all the HBO channels, with two in HD and HBO on demand.

I just assumed that was price everywhere

It's not so much that HBO would do it, it's that I have a weird deal on internet and cable that is probably a fuck up on comcasts part. I don't want to anger the gods and cause those prices to go up to the real price with HBO on top of that.

HBO is only like 10 a month here, I have Comcast too, but they recently got huge competition in my city, a whole new Fiber Optic system was put up the last few years, up to 1Gbit downloads(fastest in the nation w00t), most residential only have 30-50, but because of that, Comcast basically upgraded all their customers with 30Mbit download and cheap cable packages. I use to hate them, but they have really gotten their shit together in my city.

But yeah, they just aired a 30-minute "Making Of" special tonight, only a few new scenes we haven't seen yet in the previews, mostly stuff about the Eyrie, but everything else was pretty much in the huge block of videos I posted a week or two back. Still worth checking out, I've gotten my mom and brother psyched about this show, they don't like most stuff like this, but both have loved HBO original programing for a while, so they are excited.

10 more days.
