Windows 8

Has anyone played around with it? I'm tempted to install it, but, IMO, it's fucking ugly and looks confusing. Gimme my goddamn Start menu.

BE CAREFUL when you install it, I would probably manually create a partition and use an iso to install it for a dual boot setup.

I used the installer assuming it was like the Ubuntu Wubi installer that installs it in windows but allows it to be booted into dual boot. But you can just uninstall it in Windows. Nope. Totally overwrote my windows 7 install. It moved everything into Windows.old folder but I had to completely reformat to get back to windows 7.

Before I reformatted I played around with it for a second. I don't like the start screen. not at all. I see the use for tablets, maybe even laptops... but a standard desktop makes it more obnoxious to use. I have two monitors so I had trouble even activating the start screen without going to the other monitor. I couldn't even use it on my netbook because the minimum resolution wasn't met for the start screen.

Call me old fashioned, but I am partial to the desktop environment. I appreciate the effort to continue to evolve and improve, but the way I see the desktop is "If it ain't broke don't fix it."

I read a review on Reddit and this is essentially all of what the guy said. Windows may be fucking themselves here.

You can revert to the standard desktop format though. The tiles thing is just an optional setup.

I know I saw the desktop as a tile, but it seemed to me the primary launcher was the start screen. I didn't see how to set it as the default interface.

I need a new laptop for school this fall. Is it worth waiting for one that's preloaded with W8? I agree with Rickety, the screnshots I've seen so far look really ugly. I can't tell if their trying to be ultra user friendly with all those tile things, or if they're actually pretty functional. Opinions?

Its usually a good idea to wait until Service Pack 1 to jump into a new Windows OS. Some places have a deal that if you buy a Windows 7 laptop now, they will upgrade you to Windows 8 (for cheap if not free) when it comes out. That might be the best idea.

I don't think it's ugly at all. I don't think I'd buy another windows device, but I kind of like the look of windows 8. I've always been a fan of how the metro UI looks though.

I work at Best Buy so yeah he's right. 15 bucks to upgrade to windows 8 Professional when it comes out for 15 dollars (Not 8 Basic) Really good deal

My wife's laptop is about to take a shit on itself. The mobo is going bad I am pretty sure.

How long does that deal last? Like if we bought a laptop tomorrow would we be able to use the Win 8 upgrade 6 to 12 months from now?

But that means I'll have to wait til W8 come out before I start downloading pirated material and questionable porn so the geek squad doesn't find it.

Just bought a laptop and Windows 8 is on it. I seriously dislike it. Confusing...extra mouse clicks to do things I want...no fucking start button. Weird apps keep popping up. Yuck.

Yeah I had it for about a month and got so tired of it. Reinstalling windows was a pain in the butt, too, because Windows 8 loaded too quickly for me to hit the button fast enough to access my bios. I had to restart my computer about 30 times.

Stupid Microsoft...trying to reinvent the wheel. The look, feel, and function of Windows has worked for over 20 years (just ignore ME), don't fuck with it. It makes sense for tablets, I guess, but nobody whats a dumbed-down piece of crap on their regular PC that looks like it's designed for a child.

I'll probably be getting a PC in the next year or two and nothing will likely come with Windows 7 (or XP!) pre-installed at that point :(

Also I lament the decline of netbooks as evidenced at Best Buy's computer department. Choices: desktop, pricey/big laptop...tablet.

I don't mind windows 8 at all, and it takes one swipe and click of the mouse to go back to the 7 look.

I downloaded some tweak that completely got rid of the new start menu unless i went looking for it. It was tolerable then. But then my recording software didn't work on it, and I was having a rather difficult time getting my recording interface's drivers installed properly, so I bailed.

The Metro style is cool, I like the idea of it... but putting it "in front" of the regular desktop is a mistake. It should be the other way around, the start button should be a small metro like screen.
