The Olympics Thread

I like how people who have never been competitive swimmers say how similar swimming events are.

Either make a statement or don't.

Would you say the butterfly, breaststroke, backstroke and front crawl takes more diverse skills than a long jump, javelin throw, 200m run, discuss throw and 1500 meter run?

I'm not saying those swimming events are all the same thing. I'm saying other Olympians have impressed me more and didn't have the opportunity Phelps has to win as many medals.

That's a dumb comparison, because in the decathlon they are competing against other individuals in a variety of events, not specialists in those specific events. They're great at being good in a lot of different events, but not great at any one of them. There are swimmers that specialize solely in backstroke, breaststroke, fly and free. Furthermore they specialize in a variety of distances (usually sprint races 50m and 100m, 100m and 200m, or 200m and 400m). Phelps could legitimately win medals in all of those events if it weren't for the tight scheduling in the olympics. If not for the scheduling Phelps could (and likely would) have won medals in 100m back, 200m back, and 100m free. That means we could have been talking about 31+ medals for Phelps (maybe 2 more golds, rest silver/bronze). Phelps is going out there and not only beating people who specialize in those specific, but in a lot of cases blowing them away. The difference between swimming breast and fly is equivalent to the difference between the long jump and 100m.

There are a lot of people who throughout there track career have competed in both the 100m, 200m and long jump, because at their core they're similar. Long jump at its essence is hitting a peak speed at the time of the jump with the proper launch angle. Sprint speed helps with that. Yes, there's more difference between the long jump and 100m dash, but it's not like we're talking 100m vs high jump/pole vaulting/shot put etc.

He blows any decathlete out of the water, who are essentially people who ran track, weren't good enough to make it in their specialization, so they learned how to throw shit. Carl Lewis is right there with him, but I'll take Phelps. I'm not saying you're stupid for disagreeing with that, but I am saying you're a dumbass for saying stroke vs. stroke is the same event with slight variations. It's not.

A guy who wins 20 medals and shrugs his shoulders about it vs. a guy who wears an American flag grill on the podium.

Yeah, Phelps vs. Lochte. That's a real discussion.

Exactly.

One loves America so much he puts it on his teeth and the other just stands on the podium trying to big time his country.

Lochte all the way.

bahhaha i just saw his interview with Bob Costas too. Dude is the biggest tool bag around and now he's choking big time. How the hell did the media fall in love with him beforehand?

Even his mom knows it:

Ryan Lochte's mother, Ike, explains that her son doesn't have time for a girlfriend: "He goes out on one-night stands."

Wasn't it a bit awkward when Bob Costas pointed out that she's black?

No, it was fucking awkward when they showed a commercial of a fucking monkey doing gymnastics right after his speech.

My thoughts on Phelps, as said by Brian Williams, long time Canadian Olympic broadcaster:

He is ONE OF the greatest Olympians ever. He is certainly the most decorated. His domination in the swimming world is amazing, but he also gets 10 chances a games to medal when some athletes get one chance every 4 years.

And fuck Lochte. Dude said he pisses in the pool, too.

----

I'm going to represent a GREAT Olympian from Canada that deserves recognition outside the country. She may not meet the Greatness requirements of the US of A but she should be mentioned in the conversation of top Olympic athletes, in my opinion.

She just finished her career with a 5th place finish in the Women's Time Trials at the age of 39.

From Wikipedia:

Hughes won two bronze in the Summer Olympics in 1996 and four medals (one gold, one silver, two bronze) over the course of three Winter Olympics.

Hughes is one of only five people to have podium finishes in the Winter and Summer versions of the games, and is the only person ever to have won multiple medals in both. Hughes is also the only Canadian to have won medals in both the Summer and Winter Olympics. Hughes was the first Canadian woman to win a medal in road cycling at the Olympics, winning two in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

Great story: She said prior to the Winter Olympics in Turin that she would donate all the money in her bank account to Right To Play if she won gold. After winning she donated $10,000 dollars, leading to more than $700,000 more from Canadians inspired by her.

Now lets hope the next team has like 3 black girls, then theyll start saying ''are womens gymnastics ready for such integration?''.

Don't forget "public approved" documentation of their birth certificates.

Wow, Maroney won the Silver and she looked like someone just killed her dog or something. The girl that won from Romania came over to give her a hug and she totally dissed her. Half of those gymnastics girls seem like huge biocches.

^ ughhhhhh and i just watched it. I actually don't feel that bad anymore cause that Romanian chick did pretty good and Maroney continued to look like a little robot. She just got too cocky after that first jump

I dunno, dudes... Romanian chick came crying on her shoulder in jubilation for an extended period of time!! That's not really that cool. No one thought she could lose, and she's so dominant that she sat on her ass and still won the silver. They are trained and coached to not wear disappointment at a very young age and become emotionally stunted. She's 16 dudes! Give her a break two more years.
