What did you want to be when you grew up? What are you now?

Honest, the first thing I wanted to be was a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle. For obvious reasons, I am not that.

Because you are too old?

I've wanted to be all of these things, in order, to the best of my memory...

Fireman

Chemical engineer (dad)

Baseball player

Football player

Video game maker

Baseball player

Bo Jackson

Marine biologist

US Customs narcotics detective

Alternative transportation engineer (too many ideas in my head)

Doctor who replaces bad backs with my created bionic structures

Marine biologist

CIA agent

Stunt man / search & rescue

White collar criminal

My college majors went like this -- bio, biochem, chem, chem/business (accepted) -- told I couldn't do chem & business -- chem/economics -- didn't want to work in a lab & not interested in being a physician -- walked out the door with an economics degree, Spanish, chem & history minors, deferred law school.

Here are the key points after school:

Started a market consultancy with a friend... sold it

Securities analyst for a major investment bank... left it (corporate = yuck)

Restaurant server/bartender (needed to be on the grid financially to sign papers, but flex schedule)

Branding & development consultant for restaurants

New start-up owner (this is not secure enough yet to go public with)

So... a total failure so far.

White collar criminal

so far in my life this is the only thing i have had moderate to extreme success at.  not sure how to parlay it into an actual career, but i'm planning on scamming my way into that as well

I always wanted to be a writer -- mostly a novelist, but my interests shifted to poetry a little later on. Sometimes a writer/illustrator, but I was pretty realistic when it came to my drawing skills. (I kept drawing, but that was mostly for fun and because it made my parents and my friends laugh.) I'd supplement that interest with other careers I wanted -- chemist / experimental scientist (I really wanted to be Doc Brown), english professor/essayist, journalist, a veterinarian, a marine biologist, archaeologist, something where I could build / operate cool robots, racecar driver, and then for a long time I wanted to own a small business, like a bookstore.

Some of that stuff stuck around - I still want to own a bookstore, and I have my MFA in creative writing & a literary journal (and would love to put out a chapbook or something), buuuuuut my day job is this really boring position in a nonprofit research and education network. It's getting a little better with time, but I think at this point I'm just glad it is there paying my bills until I find a job closer to my heart / that is more fun or engaging.

I think the first thing I wanted to be was a firefighter. After that it went to a therapist/psychologist and then like a school counselor. Then into a teacher. There was also being a pro-BMX dude, photographer for extreme sports stuff, like transworld or x-games. Then concert promoter. Now my goal is to become a nutritionist of some sorts.

Right now I work at Sprouts behind the deli counter. My plan is to head into the Air Force and see if I can get a job in there being a nutritionist of sorts. If not, then I'll just use that to travel around and get my schooling done.

I would still like to work at a school or for a school though. I was thinking mostly like being in charge of the food menus and stuff. Another thing I would like to do is still do TESL in Japan. Forever.

Now I'm a lab tech/group lead for big pharma.

I wanted to be:

A ninja turtle

A marine biologist

An architect

I'm now a user experience designer / information architect at an interactive studio/agency.

List of Influences:

  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
  • Seinfeld (George Costanza [Can't-stand-juh!])
  • Seinfeld (Art Vandelay

That's not even a joke.

I love Seinfeld. I didn't piece that together until now though, haha

As a young kid I wanted to play hockey, as a pre-teen I wanted to be an actor, and in high school I wanted to be a chef or comedian. So I did the chef thing alright.

I can't decide if this thread is incredibly depressing or not. So many childhood dreams never lived.

Touche :(

To be fair at least I'm sticking with what I like, albeit at the cost of the ability to love another human.

also kids are stupid, so we had alot of stupid dreams.

to die and come back as a leotard

ah, God...it's 2:30 AM and I'm still up and Biodome was the first thing I thought of

-an elf-I got laughed for this since I was basically the last kid to believe in Santa. My dreams were crushed that very day. Hard). My dreams of building toys, inventions, being around candy, and an old man with a beard who likes having kids sit on his lap were crushed forever.

-CIA agent/all-around bad ass -I would roll around the rug in my living room pretending I was killing bad guys all the time. It was great.

-a scientist -my brother and I got a lot of science experiments we did. It was pretty cool.

-sportswriter -I did a bunch of sports reports in elementary. They weren't good at all.

-Muggsy Bogues-I wanted to be a 5 foot white kid with a 60'' vertical who would dunk on Shaq all day. I wanted to be the Rudy of basketball players. In 6th grade, I was bummed when I finally realized that there was no way I was ever going to be smaller than Muggsy Bogues)

-be a rapper -this was embarrassing. Rap name: Mass. Murdera

-football player -had shitty coaches in high school and quit when I was pretty good. I think, had I played, I would have been an All-Star in my region of Massachusetts. But it's REAL difficult to get a scholarship being from around here where there aren't any D1 football programs compared to more competitive areas (California; Florida; Ohio; Texas). So even if I hadn't quit in high school, I'd be bummed when I didn't get a D1 scholarship and quit right there. I don't think many 5'10'' white kids get scholarships where I'm from.

-stand-up comic -oh, I hate being up on stage. It takes balls. Never would have worked.

-play in a rock band- I was never any good at all. I mainly just liked playing air guitar to music while holding a guitar. It's fucking awesome. I had a bass guitar and an electric guitar. I actually saved up a shit load of $ and had top-notch equipment. I regret selling it even if I wasn't any good. Despite all the lessons I had in high schoo, I never had any rhythm at all or sense of timing. I mainly just liked talking to the guitar teachers and being around them. One of them was initially asked to be in Aerosmith by Steven Tyler before Joe Perry came into the band...oh, yeah. And I hate being on stage. I was not a natural at this.

-screenwriter -what I'm trying to do now. It's a hobby right now.

What I am right now: a bank teller

the bank I work at got robbed on the one fucking day this week I wasn't there.

I was pissed I wasn't there because I was working at another branch.

but not for reasons you might think.

I hate this job so much that I wish I got robbed so that I could have gotten a day off or even the week to 'deal' with being robbed.

I hate being a bank teller so fucking much.

I wanted to be a scientist.

I'm working on a MS in Molecular biology so I guess I'm on the right track.  But I decided to decline a PhD offer because I think I'd rather finish my MS and do electrical engineering.  The field of molecular bio is just so saturated with stiff academics that refuse to retire and postdocs working for 10 years in what is boarding on indentured servitude.  It is a bummer, but I think an engineering BS + MS in medical research could get me some really cool niche jobs in the biomed field.  I just want to learn about cool shit all day.

Ugh I am taking Molecular Biology right now for an MS in Biotechnology, and I fucking hate it. I'm only on the second week.

I did visit my former grad/PhD student lab that I worked in as an undergrad, and they were all looking at me jealous that I had an actual income already. Haha.

Ha, I work in the molecular genetics dept at my lab and I like it plenty. Biotech is gnarly though.

i wanted to be an artist and live in a little pink house with flowers out front. my degree is in classical and near eastern archaeology. i love near eastern & greek archaeology/culture. hmpf.

i am now a complex scheduler for several specialists. basically i make a lot of money and do a whole lot of nothin'. i get to use lots of medical terminology (which i love and know well). i have to obey the rules of these "special" specialists and make sure patients with weird issues see the correct provider. it's easy as pie. i'm also going to school part time for free. THANKS, JOB! i'm constantly thinking about grad school and/or becoming a teacher. who knows... i'm content for now. i'm also lazy as hell. school is a lot of work, man.

I find ALOT of this hilarious (fuck you guys). I especially like your Uncle Rico from Napoleon Dynamite attitude about being a football player. Considering you are like 5'8", 145 lbs.

You can still become a sportswriter. You'd be perfect for it because its such a joke of a job where you can write write write all day, with no accountability required of you. That or an elf. Go to grad school for journalism, you pussy.
