Orange Is The New Black

13 posts in this topic

So I spent tonight drinking and watching the first 4 episodes of this EXCELLENT new show on Netflix. Can't believe a show about a Women's Prison is the new LOST!  Seriously it is, because it borrows the Flashback structure per episode and Purgatory theme from that show. Check it out it out because its equally hilarious and deep. I guess the chick who made Weeds made this too and its getting crazy good reviews. Also Donna from That 70s Show boobs in the first 30 seconds of the first episode. And Jason Biggs for all you Jason Biggs fans out there?

To backup my statements here, I present this article from Warming Glow

I love this show. Watched it all in 2 days and have zero regrets about it hahah. I think the flashbacks to why each specific character is in prison is the most fascinating part. Also, love how it is blatantly unafraid of offending any one group in particular. Pretty raw show. Love it.

Yeah I also binged on it. My wife stumbled on it when working a grave shift, and told me about it the next day. This show had almost no hype until bloggers and tv reviewers started pushing it. No advertising, not really a big name show, and Weeds sucked for 5 seasons before this show so Kohan wasn't gonna get the benefit of the doubt.

Definitely the best Netflix show, including House of Cards.

I'm only a few episodes in but it's really impressive.  The editing and music are great.

I'm looking forward to the rest.  The fat black girl is my favorite by far: "This isn't just ice cream.  Bitch, this is a king cone."

2 more episodes for me to go, but I dont know how this doesn't go down as one of, if not THE, best show of 2013.

Also, it is so fucking funny. Taystee is the shit.

When I watched the previews I was like "meh...i dont know" even though I liked Weeds. The show definitely pulled me in though. The only thing that pisses me off is how they show back stories but never really flesh them out. I still don't know what Red did. I guess they showed everyone else's crime but what did Red do?

When I watched the previews I was like "meh...i dont know" even though I liked Weeds. The show definitely pulled me in though. The only thing that pisses me off is how they show back stories but never really flesh them out. I still don't know what Red did. I guess they showed everyone else's crime but what did Red do?

I'm only a few episodes in, but I think it's revealed in her flashback episode (ep. 2)--

It is a bit ambiguous though, so maybe they'll flesh it out more later on, but at the end of the episode, after she popped that bitch's fake tit, the woman is planning on suing or blackmailing them for $60,000.  It's never explicitly stated, but at the very end, some sketchy men are carrying wrapped up garbage bags and putting them in the freezer.  So I think her crime is for the murder or contracting the murder of that lady.

The only two things I don't really like so far (and, like I said, this is only a few episodes in, so maybe my feelings will change, but):

One, the relationship between that girl and the soldier/security guard is so random and corny.  Was it love at first sight or what?  Because she can draw manga comics well?  I don't get why a soldier that just got back from Afghanistan would be smitten with some random inmate in a prison.  They have some nice moments, but it just seems like it's all lacking a key scene where their feelings might've been ignited or something.

And two, that the ex-girlfriend of Piper is in the same small prison in New York.  Have they both been living in the same New York County all this time.  And how did they not see each other the first day?  That reveal at the end of the episode was a huge eye roller, especially since the character is a "notable" actress, it was easy to assume she'd be around in some form.

Both of those have been huge eye rollers for me, but maybe something will change or click and, in the end, they'll make more sense.  Either way, the show is really top-notch and I'm totally digging it.

I just finished it. The last three episodes are the best, just because of the buildup by the show. There are so many iconic characters, its ridiculous. Fucking Piper is the most annoying if anything, but she's still pretty cool in my book. They can go alot of ways with Season 2.

I pretty much agree exactly with this review of the whole season from Todd VanDerWerff at the A.V. Club. Read it after you've seen it all.

For those of you who want a more spoiler free review where he just judges the show off of the first 6 episodes, check that out here:

Oh as for Red:

I don't think they put a hit out on the bitchy Russian wife, I'm pretty sure they're forced to hide bodies for the mob now. And a future episode kinda sees Red getting more involved in that

As for your complaints Nomadic, ya the guard/girl relationship is pretty weak but Bennet is likable enough that I care what happens, especially after the storyline kicks up a notch mid way through the season.

After more people see the show, I'll discuss more specifics, but I just wanna reiterate that this really is the new Lost with a dash of The Wire mixed in. And titties.

the only complaint i have heard about this show at all is that pipper is a little unrealistically too real life gwyneth paltrow and that her relationship with alex is one of the least convincing lesbian relationships on tv. but really the show is mostly driven by the other characters till the end of the season. despite that flaw, this show is still excellent. 8/10 half way, 9.5/10 by the end. i immediately wanted more. a lot more.

also you know it is good if jason biggs doesn't completely suck in it.

Lost + The Wire? LOL.

From now on, every show that flashbacks will be compared to Lost.

I just finished it and give it a solid B+

I don't think it's extremely funny, but a lot of the characters are really likable.

And I agree that the flashbacks aren't as fleshed out/meaningful. Maybe the writers are just winging it so they have more material for future episodes/seasons. Maybe they'll have flash-forwards eventually ;)

Also, Pornstache Mendez is Nick Sobotka from The Wire? Funny stuff.

Super cannot wait for this shit to come back. I'm thinking that crazy jesus bitch will...

end up liking Piper for knocking her "teeth" out because she will get dentures and have beautiful teeth. She'll be grateful to her for beating her gnarly face in. Piper won't kill that obnoxious hosebeast. But hey, that's just my guess. What a cliffhanger!
