2014 Music (Half Way Point)

79 posts in this topic

Sooo folks. We have an anticipation thread, but I am more interested right now in what people are listening to from this year. I will start

Heavy Rotations:

Willie Watson - Folk Singer Vol. 1 (He is a former member of Old Crow Medicine Show. Love this man.)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b5ukmBguMzY

Timber Timbre - Hot Dreams (Wonderfully haunting album. RIYL Nick Cave)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0v8d-W68IfQ

The Lawrence Arms - Metropole (Another fun/great album from the Larry Arms)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4100IO_hN18

Strand Of Oaks - Heal (Indie Folk Singer Made a Rock Album Produced by J. Mascis. Awesome.)

Wrong Body - Big (Super fun album. I don't know what to call it. Fun-Catchy Post-Punk/Hardcore?. I don't know. Check it out)

http://wrongbody.bandcamp.com/

Saintseneca - Dark Arc (RIYL Neutral Milk Hotel. Clear influence on them.)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OuzHUFlyGYI

Cloud Nothings - Here and Nowhere Else (This album is like a punk strokes album. Very fun)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=74TP8QhupLU

The Antlers - Familiars ( I like this better than the last 2 albums. Very solid album. Really nice Trumpet through out it)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E9afJSKCOQQ

Sharon Van Etten - Are We There (Fantastic and heartbreaking. Sounds about right)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLjZur5ccsA

Others I have at least enjoyed, but I haven't given many listens:

Woods - With Light and With Love

Nickel Creek - A Dotted Line

Angel Olsen - Burn Your Fire For No Waitress

Jack White - Lazaretto

Inventions - S/T

Owls - Two

Hurray For Riff Raff - Small Town Heroes

Conor Oberst - Upside Down

Lone - Reality Testing

St. Vincent - S/T

Owen Pallett - In Conflict

Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra - Fuck Off And Get Free We Pour Light On Everything

Tycho - Awake

Moonlit Sailor - We Come From Exploding Stars

First Aid Kit - Stay Gold (Disappointing/need more listens)

Also, This Will Destroy You released a new song and it is the best thing they have ever put out.

So how about you all?

Love

-the Lawrence Arms

-Molly and the Zombies (Brian of Gaslight Anthem's side project along with a member of Ryan Adams & the Cardinals)-fun/short stuff; but no real album

Listened to only part of:

-Against Me!

-Manchester Orchestra

-Future Islands

^weirdest and most endearingly likable performance I saw. Good song.

Still need to get around to:

-Mastodon

-the Hold Steady

-Lykke Li

-the Black Keys

Waiting for (that I know of):

-the Gaslight Anthem

-Vacationer

-Every Time I Die

-Kendrick Lamar

-Foo Fighters (haven't liked an album of theirs that I actively go back & listen to since the Colour and the Shape; but I respect them & think Dave Grohl is the best. Their project they're doing sounds awesome)

Couldn't get into to even try

-St. Vincent (saw her on SNL; just weird and too avant garde)

I'm not well-versed enough in this year, but to make it more fun and cooler to get into...

-Favorite Albums

-Favorite Songs

-Late Pass in getting into a certain band, something from 2013

-Most Disappointing

-Worst

-Breakthrough Artist/Band

-Best Debut

-Best video/live performance

-Best Show

2014 so far has been kind with some highly anticipated albums living up to expectations. These are the records that I would consider to be in heavy rotation for my car and shit.

Angel Olsen - Burn Your Fire For No One

Asgeir - In The Silence

Chet Faker - Built On Glass

Horse Thief - Fear In Bliss

Mac Demarco - Salad Days

Sharon Van Etten - Are We There

St Vincent - S/T

Thee Silver Mt. Zion - Fuck Off

Timber Timbre - Hot Dreams

Wild Beasts - Present Tense

Wye Oak - Shriek

I haven't had a chance to digest First Aid Kit but I imagine it will grow on me. Excited for Slow Club releasing an album next month. Don't really have anything else on the calendar but 2014 as has been said, is doing just fine.

thank you Donwayneleach for reminding me about the new The Antlers album. I downloaded it yesterday and I am pretty damn stoked about it. I got really bored by their other 2 albums after Hospice, but this sounds pretty great from what I've heard so far. Who would have thought a Trumpet would be all you need. Also it reminds me of the last album that As Tall As Lions should have made, instead of the disjointed, mediocre they ended their run with.

What I've dug from this year:

Tycho - Awake

Skrillex - Recess - (can't hate on the Passion Pit singer and that beat on this)

Lorde - Tennis Court (Flume Remix) - (I love both these artists)

Porter Robinson - Sea of Voices (he went the m83 route)

Every Time I Die - Decayin' With The Boys (still haven't heard the full album, but i love this song)

Agalloch - The Serpent & The Sphere (folk metal legends - not really heavy enough, but still some great shit)

The Glitch Mob - Skullclub (this ish reminds me of The Crystal Method and Prodigy)

Racing Glaciers - Moths (good Alternative ish)

Movement - Like Lust (very chill electronic)

Annnnnd my favorite song of the year, which came out at the end of last year but I didn't notice til a month ago...

Caspian - (Hymn For) The Greatest Generation - instantly one of my favorite post rock songs ever.

I would recommend Kitten's debut full length for fans of slick modern pop with heavy traces of mid-to-late 80's new wave, R&B, and some early 90's alternative/shoegaze.

Is Kitten referring to her solo, or the entire band? Haha they opened for Paramore in Vegas last year and were alright - cool Depeche Mode cover - but saw a stream of the full-length a couple weeks ago and liked it so much that I went to see the El Rey show on a whim last weekend. She's playing in OC with Nilu, another great local girl, but I'll be out of town.

No I think it was a different person, the girl I know is a DJ who is getting a lot of publicity (top 25 women to watch this year etc) and is working with Usher, but yeah different Kittens.

I understand where you're coming from - I haven't even tried to listen to the new Roots album. Ever since I moved out in March, I haven't downloaded a single piece of new music.

my brother, a couple friends and I saw This Will Destroy You last night. I saw Shakey Graves this past weekend too. Great couple shows.

This Will Destroy You is so good live. Their new album is amazing too. They actually played every song of Young Mountain EP which I did not expect.

That and Strands Of Oak are probably my favorite from the year so far.

^I didn't know Damien Rice released a new album.

I haven't listened to the Delta Spirit since 2006-2007ish when I saw them play with Cold War Kids in Cambridge. Really good show sans Tokyo Police Club.

I heard good things about Ben Howard but have never checked out.

Rice's album is out tomorrow, it's actually streaming on NPR right now but leaked about a week ago. It's been on constant rotation and it's gotta be one of the most beautiful albums I've ever heard. I want to see Delta live so bad, keep missing them when they come to NYC unfortunately. And yes, definitely check out Ben Howard. Really cool experimental acoustic stuff on his new album.

Damien Rice stream-

I have been listening to Damien Rice all morning. Really enjoying it. I need a good head phones listen, because I have just had it on in the background of my wine shop.

I need to check out that Ben Howard album too.
