The Oilers/Panthers game tonight was kinda decided by one off the foot, so it's going to be an issue for the next few days that's talked about in great detail amongst hockey sites, outlets, analysts, etc.
I am starting to, more and more, go over to the side of "no goals off the foot." For one simple reason: I don't want to see a big game decided by a guy kicking a puck past the goaltender. It's hockey, not soccer. Also, I guarantee if you change it to a rule where anything off the foot counts no matter what motion is made, you are going to see guys kicking in the crease. Guarantee it.
They absolutely have to take away the current definition and set something in stone because there is absolutely no telling what constitutes a kicking motion anymore.

Anyway, that Canucks - Kings game last night was disappointing, but fun to go to nonetheless. Some questionable calls (on Bieksa, Doughty and others) and some sluggish play all over the place. Luongo looked really solid, especially in the OT, but obviously he looked terrible in the shootout. I thought it was interesting to see three brand new Canucks (Malholtra, Ballard and Hamhuis) out to kill the 4-on-3 PK in overtime. Burrows really needs to heal his shoulder faster. Torres does not belong on any NHL team's second line.
Oh yeah speaking of not belonging, some disgusting 350 pound woman with tits hanging down to her knees was sitting behind me at the game and (through mouthfuls of nachos and pretzels) kept asking her friends the stupidest fucking questions about hockey. "What's happening now? Why is the goalie skating off? Why did they blow the whistle? What's icing?" Eventually she got so drunk that she took her high heels off, lost one of them, and then when her friends told her she should leave cause she was too drunk, slipped on the beer-covered steps and fell on her fat face. None of her friends even helped her, and I assume she went back to Surrey where she belongs.
As for the kicking rule, I think the way the rule is written makes sense, but the problem is that it seems to be interpreted differently from night to night. Just like so many things in the NHL, there's no consistency. I don't think they should ever just allow anything goes off the skates because it'd be dangerous if people started booting the puck when their sticks were tied up. On the other hand, it would suck to throw the puck in front, have it randomly bounce off someone's foot and have it disallowed. The league definitely needs to address the issue.
I'm so glad hockey is back on.
